What is customer service?

Customer service refers to the advice and guidance provided by a business/company to customers on different matters. This includes assisting customers before, after and during purchases of your company’s products and services. Your main role is to ensure good relationships between company and consumers. 

Working in this role will mostly be a Monday to Friday, 9-5 style of job, depending on the exact company. You will deal with customer questions and complaints while providing them with information to be able to guide them in the right direction and resolve any issues they may have. You may also use social media and other forms of contact such as phone, email, online videos or voice calls as well as deal with customers face-to-face. 

You may also take customer orders, sell products, advise on products and services which might best suit the customer as well as using computer databases. This is also mostly an office based job. As these are postgraduate courses, they will add to your undergraduate degree and would be helpful to those in management, retail, marketing and sales in particular.

Strategic Marketing & Customer Experience Management

Postgraduate courses in this area will allow you to gain the necessary skills and knowledge in order to work in the area of customer experience and customer service in the marketing area. You will be introduced to managerially relevant theory and practice as well as issues in the marketing field. You will understand how firms can develop compelling value propositions in relation to marketing planning as well as gaining an understanding of consumer behaviour with digital and social media. Modules may include Service Marketing and Customer Experience Management, Understanding Consumer Behaviour, Managing People and Service Leadership and many more. 

There is also a course available in Service Design which will focus on identifying customer needs in order to transform services and creating new customer services. The course mainly ensures new designs to services and experiences in the industry while also developing high impact solutions to complex social issues and quality services for consumers.

Entry requirements 

Entry requirements may differ from course to course or university to university. Therefore, it is important to research your specific course in detail to ensure you meet the entry requirements. As these courses are postgraduate courses, you will need a bachelor’s degree. Some courses may accept a 2.2 degree while others will require a 2.1 in a relevant degree. In some cases experience in the business world will be essential to apply. 


Your salary will depend on a few different variables such as your exact employment, the company you work with and sometimes your experience too. It is believed that the average salary in customer service in the UK may be close to the £22,000 mark. This can very from closer to £18,000 and may rise with experience or be higher if you are working with larger companies.
