Three Canadians Awarded Fully-Funded UK Master’s Scholarships

The British High Commission in Ottawa has named three exceptional Canadians—two from Toronto and one from Edmonton—as the 2025 recipients of the prestigious Chevening Scholarship.

Chevening is the UK Government’s global scholarship programme, offering fully funded opportunities for postgraduate study in the UK to individuals with the potential to become future leaders, decision-makers, and opinion formers. Scholarships cover tuition, travel, and living expenses, while also granting access to exclusive academic, professional, and cultural experiences, plus a powerful alumni network of global leaders, including Canada’s Hon. Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry, and Vice-Admiral Angus Topshee, Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy.

For the second year running, one of Canada’s three scholarships is co-funded by Calgary-based energy company ATCO.

The 2025 Canadian Chevening Scholars are:

  • Cody Mackoway – An Alberta-based policy analyst and advocate for youth and Ukrainian communities.

  • Brendan Callan – A bio-researcher and designer recognised for innovative approaches to sustainability.

  • Zeus Eden – A sustainability and policy strategist currently serving as Press Secretary to the Mayor of Toronto.

“Our 2025 Chevening scholars are shining examples of the passion Canadians bring to the table in their pursuit of solving the most pressing of challenges. Brendan, Cody and Zeus are ambitious, influential and committed to using their considerable skills and expertise to make the world a better place. Our prestigious Chevening Scholarship programme invites emerging leaders to build on their own diverse backgrounds at the UK’s world-class universities, bringing the skills and knowledge they gain back to serve their communities. We’re thrilled to recognise these three outstanding individuals and look forward to seeing where they go from here.” – Dave Prodger, United Kingdom’s Deputy High Commissioner to Canada

“At ATCO, we believe leadership in today’s complex geopolitical and business climate begins with bold ideas and the courage to act. That’s why we are proud to support the Chevening Scholarships and thrilled to support this year’s scholar, Zeus Eden. Zeus’s remarkable journey thus far—spanning government, industry and advocacy—bodes well for tackling challenges related to sustainable energy transition, Indigenous reconciliation and economic growth. On behalf of everyone at ATCO, we celebrate Zeus’s pursuit of advanced studies at Imperial College London and look forward to the impact he will continue to make in Canada and beyond.” – Nancy Southern, Chair & Chief Executive Officer of ATCO Ltd

“I am proud to congratulate this year’s Canadian Chevening Scholars – Brendan Callan, Cody Mackoway and my own press secretary Zeus Eden. Since joining my office, Zeus has been an invaluable part of our team — with a sincere dedication to public service across many critical files, such as housing, transit, trade and U.S. tariff response. At a critical time for our country, the Chevening Scholarship not only nurtures Canada’s next generation of leaders but also strengthens our long-standing relationship with the United Kingdom.” – Mayor of Toronto Olivia Chow

The British High Commission will host a farewell reception for the scholars at Crichton Lodge, the High Commissioner’s official residence in Ottawa, on 21 August.

Since its inception in 1983, the Chevening programme has enabled over 60,000 professionals worldwide to develop their expertise in the UK before returning home to make an impact. The alumni network includes 21 current or former heads of state or government officials.

Applications for the 2026–27 Chevening Scholarships are now open and will close on 7 October 2025. Full eligibility criteria and application details are available at chevening.org/scholarships.
