UK Launches New Commonwealth Scholarship for Small Island Nations
The United Kingdom has announced the launch of a major new scholarship initiative, the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), designed to expand higher education opportunities for citizens of small island nations.
The new program, set to begin in the 2026-2027 academic year, will provide 20 fully-funded Master’s scholarships per year for two consecutive years. The scholarships are aimed at applicants who can demonstrate a passion for social impact and have a clear vision for promoting sustainable development upon returning to their home countries.
This initiative follows a commitment made by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Foreign Secretary David Lammy at the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa to strengthen the UK’s bonds with the Commonwealth.
Funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), the scholarship directly supports the key aims of CHOGM, which include fostering:
- Resilient democratic institutions and human rights.
- A resilient environment to combat climate change.
- Resilient economies to support prosperity.
- Resilient societies that empower individuals.
Applications are open to citizens from the following 18 Commonwealth countries: Belize, Dominica, Fiji, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Kiribati, Maldives, Mauritius, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu.
The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission’s (CSC) Chief Executive Officer, Annabel Boud said:
This new scholarship stream will equip aspiring change-makers with the knowledge, skills, and networks to take on the unique challenges faced by small island nations. We look forward to supporting these Scholars in their efforts to strengthen resilience and deliver a sustainable future for countries across the Commonwealth.
