What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a form of therapy that uses relaxation, intense concentration and focused attention in order to create a state of strong, focused attention and increased suggestibility. Hypnotherapy is known as a type of complementary medicine.

As a hypnotherapist, you will use hypnotism in order to help clients to achieve positive change in their life by changing their state of mind. Hypnotherapy can help with major life changes and different things such as traumatic experiences, breaking addictions and, overall, achieving a positive impact and change in peoples’ lives.

You will work with a variety of clients with many different backgrounds and stories so it is important to have strong people skills, understanding and excellent communication and listening skills in order to get the best results for your clients. The career of a hypnotherapist has the potential to be quite free in relation to working hours as many are self-employed and run their own businesses. Some may work in health centres or clinics renting a room to provide their service. Some may work for small companies.

Generally, a qualification approved by the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH), the National Hypnotherapy Society or the General Hypnotherapy Standards Council (GHSC) is desired to become a hypnotherapist. There are also options of postgraduate courses which we will take a closer look at.
